Why gratefulness grates on me…

Controversial headline I know, but here’s the thing that needles about it: hearing people who suffer with depression getting told that they should ‘be more grateful‘. You hear it all the time now: from friends; from family; from total strangers; in social media articles on ‘how to be happy’ (like there is a recipe for it that got taught that time I bunked off cookery in year 9). ‘Practising gratitude’ is to self-help what quinoa is to whole-food. Hi – I am Danni. It’s fair to say I’m pretty average. Right now I’m 33, married, living in Bristol and working in a 9-5 office job; but for much longer than I’ve been this age (9 months), known my husband (4½ years) lived in this city (7 years), or worked in this particular office (1 year) I’ve struggled with depression (21 years) and anxiety (25 years, possibly longer).
